European Night of Museums Returns with 17th Edition on July 3

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The European Night of Museums returns on Saturday, July 3, 2021, for its 17th edition. Created by the French Ministry of Culture and supported by UNESCO, the Council of Europe, and the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the event sees dozens of Italian museums participating by opening in the evening for a symbolic one-euro entry fee, unless free admission is offered. This initiative aims to boost post-pandemic cultural revival ahead of the summer season. After a reduced digital edition in autumn 2020, the 2021 edition focuses on hope under the motto "The Future of Museums: Regenerate and Reinvent," chosen by ICOM. The theme encourages professionals and communities to imagine new practices for creating and sharing cultural and social values. Participating museums include the Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Villa Adriana in Rome, the Uffizi and Gallerie dell'Accademia in Florence, the Museo Nazionale di Ravenna, and the Museo dell'Arte Orientale in Venice. Special events include guided tours at the archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and a live concert by Nicola Manzan at the Palazzo dei Musei in Reggio Emilia. The full list of participants is continuously updated on the Italian Ministry of Culture's website (cultura.gov.it/evento/nottedeimusei2021), with updates shared via social media using hashtags #museitaliani, #NuitDesMusées, and #NottedeiMusei.
