European Museum Night 2017: Late Openings, Free Entry, and Special Events Across Italy

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The 13th European Museum Night takes place on May 20, 2017, under the patronage of the Council of Europe, UNESCO, and ICOM. Participating museums across Europe offer free or €1 entry with extended evening hours. In Italy, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage aligns the event with its own Museum Festival (May 20-21) themed 'Raccontare l'indicibile' (Telling the Unspeakable). Highlights include: at the American Academy in Rome, a second opening of Charles Ray's 'Mountain Lion Attacking a Dog' (2017), a reinterpretation of the Hellenistic sculpture 'Lion Attacking a Horse' that critiques American violence and urbanization. At GAM Turin, Carlos Cruz-Diez's immersive 'Chromosaturation' installation (1965) is featured alongside the exhibition 'L'emozione dei COLORI nell'arte'. Milan's Pinacoteca di Brera offers drawing workshops inspired by Lorenzo Lotto's portraits. Bologna's Museo di Palazzo Poggi presents augmented reality tours of its historical collections. Trieste's Roman Theater opens with guided tours revealing the site's controversial 1930s rediscovery tied to Fascist racial laws. At Madre Museum in Naples, first Italian solo shows by Wade Guyton ('Siamo arrivati') and Stephen Prina ('English For Foreigners') are accessible. Ferrara's Castello Estense hosts a concert mixing classical and contemporary music. Genoa's Museo di Sant'Agostino presents the restored fresco by Valerio Castello (1624-1659), detached in 1936 and recently recovered.
