European Heritage Days 2024: Italian State Museums Open at Night for €1

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The 2024 European Heritage Days, themed 'Patrimonio in cammino' (Heritage on the Move), will take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September across Italy. Promoted by the Council of Europe and the European Commission, and coordinated in Italy by the Ministry of Culture, the event features guided tours, extraordinary openings, and digital initiatives at state and non-state museums and cultural sites. A special highlight: on Saturday evening, state museums will open with a symbolic entry fee of €1. The European Heritage Days, launched in 1985, are one of Europe's largest participatory cultural events, opening thousands of monuments and sites—some usually closed to the public—for free or reduced admission. The initiative aims to raise awareness of Europe's cultural richness and diversity, combat racism and xenophobia, and promote tolerance. In Italy, archaeological parks, museums, castles, palaces, monumental sites, mausoleums, theaters, and amphitheaters will welcome visitors 'in cammino' to discover Italian cultural heritage, including both popular and lesser-known sites. The list of participating sites is available on the Ministry of Culture's website.
