Eugenio Viola Leaves Museo Madre After Seven Seasons of the Spirit

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Eugenio Viola, curator at Museo Madre in Naples since 2009, concludes his tenure with Gian Maria Tosatti's exhibition 'Sette Stagioni dello Spirito' (Seven Seasons of the Spirit), running until March 20, 2017. The show culminates Tosatti's three-year residency project that began in September 2013 with '1_ La peste', comprising seven site-specific installations across Naples. Viola's work at Madre included rebuilding the museum's collection through 'Per_Formare un collezione' (2013 in progress) and initiating the Transit network with Middle Eastern partners (2009-2011). He highlights his curatorial focus on provocative, ethical art, citing the 2014 retrospective 'Estoy Viva' of Regina José Galindo at PAC Milan (co-curated with Diego Sileo) and the 'Sui Generis' performance festival on gender at Tenuta dello Scompiglio in Lucca (2015). Viola has been appointed Senior Curator at PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts) in Australia, a position he accepted after a rigorous selection process that included a visit to Perth in August 2016. He plans to engage with local Australian artists, Aboriginal art, and the Southeast Asian and Pacific regions.
