Eugenio Viola Appointed Senior Curator at PICA, Perth
Eugenio Viola, curator of the Estonia Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale, has been appointed senior curator at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA) in Western Australia, effective February 2017. Viola announced the move during a press conference for Gian Maria Tosatti's exhibition at Madre Museum in Naples, where he has served as Curator at large since 2013 under director Andrea Viliani. He applied for the PICA position via an open call in 2015, participating in Skype interviews and a final visit to Perth in August 2016, where he was selected from three candidates. Viola described the decision to change continents as a significant challenge, noting his life has been marked by extremes. His last exhibition at Madre, dedicated to Naples, coincides with his first curated show there in 2009, also focused on the city.
