Eugenio Viola appointed Chief Curator of MAMBO in Bogotá

institutional · 2026-05-04

Italian curator Eugenio Viola has been named Chief Curator of the MAMBO – Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá in Colombia, as announced on his Facebook profile. He will leave his current role at PICA – Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in Australia, where he has worked since February 2017, to take up the new position. Viola previously served as curator at the Madre museum in Naples from 2009 to 2016, where he was responsible for research and development of the collection and co-curated exhibitions for Boris Mikhailov, Francis Alÿs, and Daniel Buren. In 2014, Apollo magazine named him one of the most talented young figures in the art world, and Artribune awarded him Best Italian Curator in 2016. Viola has curated international exhibitions including Regina José Galindo at Frankfurter Kunstverein (2016), Karol Radziszewski at CoCA in Poland (2014), Mark Raidpere at EKKM in Estonia (2013), Marina Abramović at PAC in Italy (2012), and ORLAN at MAMC in France (2007). He also curated the Estonia Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Viola's appointment marks a new chapter for MAMBO, which has lacked a curator in recent years; previous curators include Eduardo Serrano, Carmen María Jaramillo, Álvaro Medina, Ana María Lozano, and María Elvira Ardila. His first exhibition at MAMBO will feature Mexican artist Teresa Margolles, opening March 21, addressing the Venezuelan migration crisis in Colombia.
