EU to Impose Most Far-Reaching Sanctions on Russia This Autumn
According to Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, the European Union is set to implement its most comprehensive sanctions against Russia since the onset of the Ukraine conflict. In a discussion with the German publication Die Welt, Kallas revealed that these forthcoming measures, expected in autumn, will represent the most extensive sanctions yet. She noted that previous sanctions have already inflicted over €1 trillion (US$1.16 trillion) in costs on Russia, with the new package anticipated to expand the list of sanctioned Russian entities by one-third. EU diplomatic sources later mentioned that the European External Action Service (EEAS) aims to target around 1,600 individuals and entities linked to Moscow's military-industrial sector, including travel restrictions, transaction bans, and asset freezes. Currently, the EU has sanctioned nearly 3,000 individuals and organizations. Kallas reiterated the necessity of maintaining pressure on Moscow until the conflict concludes. Specific details and timing for the new sanctions remain undisclosed.
