EU Mies Awards 2026 Honors Adaptive Reuse Projects in Belgium and Slovenia
The 2026 Mies van der Rohe Awards, which are part of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, recognized two innovative projects that focus on adaptive reuse. The Architecture Prize went to AgwA and architecten jan de vylder inge vinck for their impressive renovation of the Charleroi Palais des Expositions, a 1950s convention center, utilizing selective demolition and redesigning the space. On the other hand, the Emerging Architecture Prize for Temporary Spaces was awarded to Vidic Grohar Arhitekti for their transformation of industrial halls into temporary cultural venues at the Slovenian National Theatre Drama in Ljubljana. The jury praised how architecture can creatively overcome challenges. The winners were chosen from 410 submissions and will be celebrated at an awards ceremony on May 11-12, 2026, in Barcelona's Mies van der Rohe Pavilion.
