EU Launches €30B AI Gigafactory Bid to Boost Computing Capacity

The European Union has issued a tender invitation to create as many as seven AI gigafactories throughout Europe, supported by around €30 billion in both public and private funding. This initiative, spearheaded by the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, allocates up to €10 billion from public sources and a minimum of €20 billion from private investments. The deadline for submissions is November 12, with selections anticipated by early 2027, and construction set to commence that same year. Each gigafactory will deliver cutting-edge AI computing capabilities and is organized into two lots to facilitate various projects with substantial financing. A joint procurement agreement has been signed by eighteen member states, and the chosen gigafactories are expected to start operations within 18 months of contract finalization.
