Ettore Sottsass's Casa Lana Reconstructed at Triennale Milano

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The perfectly preserved core of Ettore Sottsass's Casa Lana apartment has been dismantled and reassembled on the first floor of Palazzo dell'Arte at Triennale Milano. Originally located at via Cola di Rienzo in Milan, between Parco Solari and Piazza Napoli, the interior was designed for printer Giovanni Lana and his family. Sottsass eliminated the corridor, merging all daytime functions into a single room featuring a wooden 'box' containing three Califfo sofas for music and relaxation. The reconstruction, housed within a fiery red installation by Luca Cipelletti and Christoph Radl, was made possible by a donation from Sottsass's widow Barbara Radice. It is part of Triennale's ongoing initiative to acquire complete interiors, following the recent exhibition on Carlo Mollino's Casa Albonico. The reconstruction was carried out with Iskra Grisogono of Studio Sottsass and continuous consultation with the Lana family. Stefano Boeri described it as 'a true time machine created by one of the international geniuses of the 20th century.' Around this permanent installation, the temporary exhibition 'Ettore Sottsass. Struttura e colore' curated by Marco Sammicheli presents paintings, drawings, photographs, and objects exploring the relationship between space, form, and color, including preparatory drawings for ceramic series such as Ceramiche Sbagliate (1963-64), Grandi Ceramiche (1966), and Ceramiche Tantriche (1968).
