Etruscan Treasures from Florence and Volterra to Debut in Spain at Alicante's MARQ
The MARQ archaeological museum in Alicante, Spain, will host the exhibition "Etruscos – El Amanacer de Roma" (Etruscans – The Dawn of Rome) from August 26 to December 12, 2021. It features 150 artifacts from the Etruscan collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Florence and the Guarnacci Museum of Volterra, many shown in Spain for the first time. The exhibition explores trade and cultural links between the Etruscans and Iberian peoples, focusing on luxury wine exports from the 6th century BCE. Curated by archaeologist Giuseppina Carlotta Cianferoni with a team from the three participating museums, the show includes pieces from 37 Etruscan sites, such as the Urn of Ulysses and the Sirens, the Rape of Proserpina urn, a canopic jug from Chiusi, a funerary stele from Florence, and a male sarcophagus from the Rosavecchia necropolis. Gold objects like the Orbetello diadem and bracelets from Bisenzio and Vetulonia, bronze statues from Fermo and Fiesole, and a rare infundibulum (strainer) found near Javea, Spain, are also on display. The exhibition was presented at the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid with Italian Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia and Alicante officials. It follows MARQ's recent focus on civilizations that interacted with Iberian culture, including Greeks, Vikings, and Egyptians.
