Etruscan Necropolis Hidden in Orvieto Woods Faces Accessibility Challenges

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

In the Paglia river valley at Castel Viscardo, close to Orvieto, archaeologists have discovered 28 chamber tombs within the Etruscan necropolis that was found in 1986. The Caldane Necropolis, which had previously been plundered by tomb raiders, is now protected, though its difficult terrain restricts visitor access. Significant artifacts have been unearthed from the burials, including painted ceramics, bucchero, and a decorated Etruscan bronze mirror, most of which are exhibited at the Museo Etnografico del Cotto di Castel Viscardo. Mayor Daniele Longaroni announced intentions to enhance access: "Thanks to the Soprintendenza ai beni culturali dell'Umbria, the site is well preserved... We are considering a project to reach the necropolis via pedestrian paths from the town center."
