Estudio Carroll's Xiqué Boutique Hotel Integrates Natural Ventilation and Local Materials in Puerto Escondido

In Puerto Escondido, Estudio Carroll has designed Xiqué Boutique Hotel, a 620 m² structure on a 278 m² plot featuring eight rooms, a ground-floor restaurant, and a terrace with a pool overlooking the Pacific. The hotel's orientation maximizes thermal comfort: south facade circulation areas shield living spaces from intense radiation, east zone houses services, and north- and west-facing rooms look toward the garden and sea. West facade doors and palm-bone louvers capture prevailing winds, while a southeast staircase acts as a natural chimney expelling hot air, reducing mechanical cooling needs. Surfaces are coated in rose-terracotta chukum, a low-absorption, waterproof stucco suited to the tropical climate. Additional materials include legally sourced macuil wood for interiors and clay tiles for exterior floors. The design preserves existing trees and dedicates about 100 m² to a garden and terrace, with an artificial wetland treating wastewater through mangrove-inspired processes. Curved volumes, inspired by the female form, create semi-shaded terraces and a fluid presence facing the Pacific. The hotel is featured in Glocal Design Magazine's 89th edition, 'Visionarias del espacio,' which profiles 15 women architects and interior designers in Mexico, with covers by Prince Láuder and Jimena Estíbaliz.
