Esteban Vicente's Collages and Sculptures at NYU Grey Art Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Between January 11 and March 26, 2011, the Grey Art Gallery at New York University presented 'Concrete Improvisations: Collages and Sculpture by Esteban Vicente.' This exhibition celebrated the collages and small sculptures of Vicente, who worked across five decades. A Modernist and colorist born in 1903 and passing in 2001, Vicente began his collage work in 1949, inspired by Elaine de Kooning. His pieces, such as 'Orange, Red Black' and 'Kalani Hawaii,' showcased an evolution in color depth. The display included collages and sculptures from the late 1980s and 1990s, along with works titled 'Divertimiento' from 1960 to 1979. Vicente, who believed teaching was vital to his art, received the Premio Arcale in 1999 but was unable to attend the award ceremony. The gallery is situated at 100 Washington Square East, NYC.
