Essential Duchamp Touring Asia and Australia

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has organized 'The Essential Duchamp', the largest exhibition ever dedicated to Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), to mark the 50th anniversary of his death. The show will tour Asia and Australia for nearly two years, featuring over 100 works including many never before seen in the East, such as 'Portrait of Dr. Dumouchel' (1910), 'Sonata' (1911), and 'Chocolate Grinder (No. 2)' (1914). It opens December 9, 2018 at the Tokyo National Museum in Japan, then travels to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, and finally to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. The exhibition follows a strict chronological structure, covering Duchamp's early influences (Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism), his revolutionary readymades including 'Fountain' (1917), his move from Paris to New York during WWII, his avant-garde films with Man Ray, and his later years. Timothy Rub, CEO of the Philadelphia Museum, stated that the museum is uniquely suited for this ambitious exhibition, thanks to the 1950 donation of the Louise and Walter Arensberg collection, which made it a center for Duchamp studies. Previous Duchamp exhibitions include the 2014 Centre Pompidou show 'Marcel Duchamp, la peinture même', the 2017 Royal Academy of London's 'Dalí/Duchamp', and Bologna's 'Duchamp Magritte Dalí. I rivoluzionari del ‘900'.
