Escif's 5,000-tree land art installation on Monte Olivella

artist · 2026-05-05

Spanish street artist Escif has created 'Breath – Tempo di ricarica', a monumental environmental artwork on Monte Olivella in the Gulf of Sapri, Salerno, Italy. The piece consists of 5,000 trees (2,500 holm oaks and 2,500 Italian maples) planted over 120,000 square meters, depicting a battery's energy cycle through seasonal color changes. Curated by Antonio Oriente of the Incipit association, the project aims to reforest the mountain, partially deforested in the mid-18th century, causing hydrogeological instability. Funding comes from a two-month Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign and a concert by Irish singer Damien Rice on May 19 at Teatro Acacia in Naples, his first ever performance in the city. The artwork will be visible from kilometers away and is the largest of its kind in Europe.
