Escher GuneWardena wraps l.a.Eyeworks flagship in insulation cave

architecture-design · 2026-05-28

l.a.Eyeworks has opened a new flagship store in Los Angeles, designed by local firm Escher GuneWardena Architecture. The space repurposes two former tropical plant nurseries, where building insulation was transformed into the primary design feature, forming rugged walls and ceilings coated in silver paint. The silver hue references Andy Warhol's Factory, connecting to the brand's history of featuring Warhol in its iconic ad campaigns shot by Greg Gorman. The store continues the brand's tradition of challenging conventional retail design, echoing its disruptive 1980s advertising that featured celebrities like RuPaul and Debbie Harry.
