Esch-sur-Alzette, the second-largest city in Luxembourg, has kicked off its European Capital of Culture 2022 initiative, spearheading a partnership with 18 municipalities from southern Luxembourg and France's Grand Est region. Under the title Remix Culture, the program boasts a budget of €130 million and encompasses 2,000 events, which include 310 performances, 141 concerts, 137 exhibitions, 32 festivals, and 360 workshops. This initiative seeks to reimagine the city's former industrial landscape into a vibrant cultural hub. Key venues such as Rockhall, Konschthal, Batiment 4, and Bridderhouse will host activities centered around four themes: Remix Europe, Remix Nature, Remix Yourself, and Remix Art. Esch2022 also collaborates with Kaunas, Lithuania, and Novi Sad, Serbia, featuring significant exhibitions on identity and mining heritage to draw tourists and retain young commuters.
