Es–senze: Olfactory Sculptures at Palazzo Mocenigo

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition titled Es–senze, curated by Pier Paolo Pancotto, showcases twelve olfactory sculptures at Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice. Featuring works by artists such as Mircea Cantor, Mateusz Chorobski, and Jason Dodge, the exhibition is open until November 27, 2022, and is located on the first floor of the historic palace in Santa Croce. Each piece embodies a scent that reflects various aspects of reality, including tar, incense, and garbage. Mavive, a perfume company from Venice, provided technical assistance to ensure the fragrances do not intermingle across rooms. Pancotto noted that the exhibition harmonizes with the museum's architectural history, with some installations adjusted for their surroundings. Palazzo Mocenigo also offers a unique perfume history route, featuring five rooms dedicated to raw materials and a reconstructed 16th-century perfumer's workshop. Masks are not required for visitors to enjoy the scents, and Pancotto referred to the project as an experimental first chapter.
