Erodiade Returns: Mallarmé's Unfinished Opera Revived at Vie Festival
At the Vie Festival in Modena, Marinella Guatterini revived Erodiade – Fame di vento, a choreographic work based on Stéphane Mallarmé's unfinished opera, over twenty years after its 1993 premiere at the Ponchielli. The piece was restaged at Teatro Storchi as part of Guatterini's project Recostruction Italian Contemporary Choreography Anni 80/90. The narrative explores avant-garde tensions through a plastic score in space, set to Paul Hindemith's musical counterpoint. Julie Ann Anzilotti's Compagnia XE performs the central figure, embodying conflicts between good and evil, ecstasy and abyss. Alighiero e Boetti's set design features a red circle on folding screens, framing the chaos within a fiery cosmos. The work juxtaposes classical and modernist elements, with a voiceover and the figure of John the Baptist serving a linguistic modernity focused on beauty.
