Ercole de' Roberti and Lorenzo Costa Star in Ferrara Renaissance Show

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara hosts 'Rinascimento a Ferrara', an ambitious exhibition featuring 100 works, including over 20 by Ercole de' Roberti — the largest concentration of his pieces ever assembled. The show also highlights Lorenzo Costa, a lesser-known but pivotal figure who introduced a modern style influenced by Perugino and Leonardo. The exhibition traces the Ferrarese Renaissance from the court of Borso d'Este (1450–1471) through the 'Officina ferrarese' artists like Cosmè Tura and Francesco del Cossa, to Costa's later period in Mantua under the Gonzaga. Key loans include the Bentivoglio Diptych from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and works from the Griffoni Polyptych and Garganelli Chapel frescoes. The show is curated by Marta Santacatterina.
