Equity Threatens Saturday Strikes in London's West End This Summer
Equity, the performing arts trade union, has warned of a "summer of disruption" in London's West End due to stalled minimum pay negotiations with the Society of London Theatre (SOLT). The union is conducting its first ballot for strike action since the 1980s, asking members if they are willing to strike on Saturdays and implement an overtime ban. Disagreements remain over pay, holiday, rehearsal time, injury, and stage management differentials, as well as new roles like fight and social media captains. SOLT reports that 36% of theatres expect an operating deficit this year, citing increased costs for materials and energy. Equity's general secretary Paul Fleming described the union as "industrial action ready" after his re-election in May. While widespread strikes in UK theatre are rare—potentially over a century since the last comparable action—similar tactics have been used in the US, including the 2007 Broadway stagehand strike and the 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Tate gallery workers also took seven days of strike action in 2025. The current SOLT agreement expires at the end of this month, and both sides have historically maintained a constructive relationship. The outcome of the ballot remains uncertain, with the potential for industrial action to disrupt Saturday performances.
