Epistemic Stance Survival in Memory Compression: Format Matters

A recent study published on arXiv (2608.06953) examines how the presentation of epistemic stance information influences its retention in compressed memory systems for agents. Analyzing 60 claims across seven registers, the findings indicate that representing the stance as a labeled field, rather than as a bracketed comment, markedly enhances retention. In two models, labeled fields improved retention by approximately 15 points (37 claims versus 2 in one model, and 30 versus 8 in the other; permutation p=0.00005). A pre-registered replication on Haiku, with established predictions and decision rules prior to execution, achieved a +15.6 point increase, retaining 38 claims against 1. The study emphasizes that while compression tends to eliminate qualifiers, explicit formatting can help preserve epistemic standing.
