Epicenter X: Saudi Contemporary Art Opens at Arab American National Museum
The Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, presents 'Epicenter X: Saudi Contemporary Art,' the first exhibition in the United States dedicated to Saudi contemporary art. Curated by museum director Devon Akmon, the show features works by Ahmed Mater (photography), Qamar Abdulmalik (installation 'Asylum of Dreams'), Marwah Al Mugait (video installation), and Palestinian artist Ayman Yossri Daydban (photography), who is currently in residence at the museum. The exhibition aims to challenge stereotypical representations of Arab culture through diverse media, from traditional mural paintings to video installations. It opens one month after the museum launched its 'Artists + Residents' program at the City Hall Artspace Lofts, which includes Franco-Moroccan artist-designer Sara Ouhaddou, saxophonist Michael Ibrahim (founder of the National Arab Orchestra), theater experimentalist Ping Chong, and playwright Ismail Khalidi. The exhibition is seen as a cultural diplomatic move by the Trump administration to strengthen ties with Saudi Arabia amid geopolitical tensions, including the Qatar crisis, the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, and China's growing influence in the Middle East and East Asia. The show runs at the Arab American National Museum, 13624 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI.
