Enzo Cucchi Drawing Sparks Blasphemy Controversy in Vittorio Veneto

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A drawing by Enzo Cucchi, displayed in the window of Codalunga, Nico Vascellari's experimental space in Vittorio Veneto, has ignited a blasphemy scandal. The artwork depicts a panther playing with a Madonna statuette, which local residents and business owners found offensive. Antonella Secchi, director of the local Ascom, reported complaints from shopkeepers and public establishments on Via Martiri, with some even throwing eggs at the window. Codalunga, founded in 2005, is known for its radical contemporary research spanning video art, performance, graphics, independent publishing, and various music genres. Vascellari, who recently performed at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, responded by launching a temporary store called "Artigli sulla Madonna" selling T-shirts and gadgets inspired by the incident, turning the controversy into marketing. The event originally opened on February 24, featuring a live performance by Gang Of Ducks, a concert by Oddgrad, and the presentation of the fanzine Sn50 and jewelry by designer Delfina Delettrez.
