Enzo Cosimi's 'I love my sister' Explores Trans Identity Through Performance

other · 2026-05-04

At the Gender Bender Festival in Bologna, 2018, choreographer Enzo Cosimi presented 'I love my sister', a performance directed by him and performed by Egon Botteghi. The work traces Botteghi's life from a passion for horses and a fall, to fatherhood and a female-to-male transition, interspersed with Baroque arias. Cosimi, known for exploring queer realities, aims to give visibility to marginalized stories through poetic transfiguration. The performance includes video projections, live dressing, shaving, and a testosterone injection shown on video. Botteghi sings an aria from Alessandro Stradella's oratorio 'San Giovanni Battista' and ends with a quote from Judith Butler: 'I am not a monster | I am not a human case | I am and that's it.' The piece is a secular celebration of beauty and self-determination, challenging invisibility and reclaiming identity.
