Enseigner / Produire – Le numérique dans l'art at Centre Pompidou and Le Fresnoy
The two-part exhibition-enquiry "enseigner / produire – le numérique dans l'art" was curated by Christophe Kihm and held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris from November 16, 2005 to January 16, 2006, and at Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing from November 5 to December 31, 2005. The project explores the history and current state of the encounter between the art world and digital technologies, a relationship that has generated both hope and doubt. By engaging with institutions and key figures who have been privileged actors in this history, Kihm highlights the multiplicity of viewpoints and approaches, as well as the secret universe behind the scenes of art—the schools, studios, and laboratories. Instead of the recurrent seduction maneuvers, the exhibition poses a deeper, more truth-seeking inquiry at a time when digital art seems to have reached a certain maturity. While its origins date back to the early years of computing and networks, digital art now has more than half a century of existence and two decades of effervescence.
