Enrique Chiu's 1,000 km Mural Sabotages US-Mexico Border Wall

artist · 2026-05-05

Mexican artist Enrique Chiu has launched the Mural of Brotherhood, a project aiming to paint a 1,000 km mural along the US-Mexico border as a peaceful protest against Donald Trump's proposed wall. Trump requested $18 million from Congress to complete the barrier, which originated in 1990 under the Bush administration and currently spans 650 km, with plans to add 500 km. Chiu, who crossed the border illegally at age eight with his mother and lived in Los Angeles, began painting on existing border structures in 2016 with local help. The murals feature Mexican folklore symbols and stories to support Latino communities. Chiu has created over 80 murals in 10 cities across California, Mexico, and Guatemala. His previous 5 km-long mural along the Arkansas River in Colorado entered the Guinness World Records but was destroyed in 2015 during bank stabilization work. The project is described as a 'peaceful sabotage' of divisive political policies.
