ENI's Horizontal Skyscraper Nears Completion in Milan

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The new ENI headquarters in San Donato Milanese, designed by Morphosis Architects and Nemesi, is nearing completion after winning a 2011 competition. The project, led by Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne, features three interconnected horizontal towers totaling 65,000 sqm. Construction began in 2018 and is expected to finish by 2022, with inauguration planned for 2023. The complex includes 45,000 sqm of office space for 4,600 workstations, 12,000 sqm of common areas, and 2,800 sqm of lobbies. An 8,000 sqm photovoltaic park on the roofs will generate 300,000 kWh, contributing to LEED Gold certification. The tallest tower, Icon Tower, reaches 45 meters with 10 floors and 1,100 workstations. Skygarden Tower is 38 meters tall with 1,250 workstations, and Landmark Tower is 31 meters tall with 21,000 sqm, connected to Icon Tower by an 85-meter bridge. The design features "metamorphic facades" with metal sunshades for energy performance. Nemesi CEO Michele Molè described the project as "a loop generated from the ground" that expresses "the metamorphosis of matter into energy." The complex includes a central cavea square and a documentation center dedicated to the history of Metanopoli. The project continues Enrico Mattei's 1952 vision for the garden city, with earlier contributions by architects like Gabetti e Isola, Albini e Helg, and Nizzoli e Oliveri.
