Endless Residency: New Observatory for Artist Mobility in Italy

institutional · 2026-04-27

Endless Residency, a project aimed at enhancing artistic mobility, was initiated to foster cultural discussions both in Italy and globally. Established by Giulio Verago and Silvia Conta during her residency at Viafarini in 2019, it receives backing from the Italian Council of the Ministry of Culture. The project was introduced in the summer of 2021 through a series of online discussions with various Italian organizations. In late 2021, the artist residency association STARE was created to promote cultural accessibility. Endless Residency collaborated with ICOM Italia to produce questionnaires, which were analyzed with the University of Bergamo. In September 2021, Res Artis hosted a digital conference on alternative mobility formats, revealing that 23% of institutions had initiated virtual programs while 12% of global residencies had closed due to COVID.
