Endless Nostalghia: Tarkovsky's nostalgia reimagined through contemporary art and infinite web

digital · 2026-04-27

Curated by Treti Galaxie for Toscanaincontemporanea2020, the project Endless Nostalghia draws inspiration from Andrei Tarkovsky's 1983 film Nostalghia, where the director used Italian landscapes to evoke his lost Russia. The exhibition format responds to the pandemic-era need for remote experiences, embedding nostalgia's pain, melancholy, and loss. Five contemporary artists—Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Monia Ben Hamouda, Michele Gabriele, Lucia Leuci, and Namsal Siedlecki—installed works in specific locations Tarkovsky filmed: the submerged church of Santa Maria in Vittorino near Cittaducale, the thermal pool at Piazza delle Sorgenti in Bagno Vignoni, Piero della Francesca's fresco at Museo della Madonna del Parto in Monterchi, and Piazza del Campidoglio and Via dei Condotti in Rome. The physical exhibitions had no public; only photographic documentation records them. All traces are collected on an infinite web page that lets each user control the scrolling speed, with images in a linear sequence that rewinds differently for each new visitor. The project explores time, distance, and the fragmented society Tarkovsky lamented through his character Domenico's plea for unity and simplicity.
