EMYA 2017: European Museum of the Year Award call for entries
The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) 2017 is accepting applications until June 24. Organized by the European Museum Forum under the patronage of the Council of Europe since 1977, the award recognizes innovative museums from the 47 Council of Europe member states that have opened or been renovated (even partially) in the last three years. The 2016 edition was held in Tolosa and San Sebastian, Spain, where the POLIN Museum of Warsaw won. Previous winners include the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (2015). No Italian museum has ever won the main prize, though Italian institutions have received twelve special mentions since 1977, including the Museo di Faenza, Museo Civico di Rende, Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano, and MUSE in Trento. Italy has hosted the award only three times: Milan (1982), Bologna (1990), and Pisa (2001). The 2017 winner will be announced in Paris. The award emphasizes innovation regardless of museum size or prestige, with winners selected through site visits by European Museum Forum judges. The award also includes the Council of Europe Prize (won by Ecomuseo delle Valli di Argenta in 1992) and the Micheletti Prize (won by Città della Scienza di Naples in 2005).
