Emmy de Martelaere's 5 Manifestations + 1 Non Lieu chronicled in new publication

publication · 2026-04-23

Éditions Artgates has released a book documenting Emmy de Martelaere's series of art events, the 5 Manifestations (1993–1998) and the subsequent Non Lieu project. De Martelaere, an art agent and publisher, invited artists to create new works for five-day presentations in unconventional Parisian venues: Virginie Mounicot in a disused metal workshop, Francisco Ruiz de Infante at La Ménagerie de Verre, Bernadette Genée and Alain Le Borgne in a rue de Rivoli apartment, Gotscho at the Opéra Comique foyer, and Hughes Decointet in a rue Lhomond boutique. In 2000, she initiated the Non Lieu cycle by offering an empty building on rue Saint Nicolas to Decointet, Ruiz de Infante, and Wouters. The final Non Lieu took place in Rio de Janeiro in 2001, pairing French and Brazilian artists. The book details her relationships with the artists and the psychological dimensions of their collaborations.
