Emma Talbot's 'The Age/L'Età' Premieres at Whitechapel Gallery Following Max Mara Art Prize Win
Emma Talbot, recipient of the 2020 Max Mara Art Prize for Women, unveils 'The Age/L'Età' at London's Whitechapel Gallery from 30 June to 4 September 2022. The exhibition, featuring animation, painted silk panels, three-dimensional pieces, and drawings, will later travel to Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy, from 23 October 2022 to 19 February 2023. Talbot's work investigates representation, ageing, power dynamics, governance, and nature, envisioning a future where humanity confronts late capitalism's fallout and seeks ancient, holistic survival methods. Inspired by Gustav Klimt's 'Three Ages of Woman' (1905), which she viewed during her residency, Talbot reinterprets the elderly figure as empowered. Her six-month Italian residency, organized by Collezione Maramotti, involved travel through Reggio Emilia, Catania, and Rome to research textile craftsmanship, permaculture, classical mythology, and historical sites. The prize supports women artists through a biannual award and residency program, culminating in this new body of work that critiques modern structures while celebrating natural world connections.
