Emma Talbot Replaces Hercules with an Elderly Heroine at Collezione Maramotti
British artist Emma Talbot (Stourbridge, 1969) has created a multimedia installation for Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy, reinterpreting the myth of Hercules' twelve labors by replacing the hero with an elderly woman. The work, titled 'The Age: L’Età,' addresses contemporary issues such as pharmaceuticals, fertility, immigration, food production, fossil fuels, capital, and creativity. Talbot's starting point was Gustav Klimt's 1905 painting 'The Three Ages of Woman' at the Galleria Nazionale di Roma, particularly the allegory of old age. She combined this with the principles of permaculture, as explained by Laura Smith in the catalogue. During a residency at Max Mara's textile facilities, Talbot used recycled silks and explored new production methods, resulting in large silk paintings suspended in the exhibition space, a sculpture made of threads and dyed fabrics, drawings on paper, and a video animation. The exhibition is part of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, which Talbot won in 2019. The narrative unfolds like a pre-Renaissance fresco, with the elderly heroine displaying wisdom and gentleness rather than violence, promoting alternative ways of living in harmony with the Earth.
