award · 2026-04-20

Emma Talbot has been named the recipient of the 2020 Max Mara Prize for Women, announced by the Whitechapel Gallery and Collezione Maramotti. The prize, established in 2005 and presented biennially, provides a six-month residency in Italy where Talbot will develop new work. Her research will take her to Rome, Reggio Emilia, and Sicily, focusing on classical mythology, textile craftsmanship, and permaculture. The resulting exhibition will debut in 2021 at both the Whitechapel Gallery in London and the Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia. This eighth edition of the award supports UK-based women artists in creating their first major solo exhibitions. Talbot was chosen from a shortlist that included Allison Katz, Katie Schwab, Tai Shani, and Hanna Tuulikki. The selection panel consisted of gallerist Florence Ingleby, artist Chantal Joffe, collector Fatima Maleki, and art critic Hettie Judah, with Whitechapel director Iwona Blazwick serving as chair.
