Emma Dexter appointed British Council Visual Arts Director
In September 2014, Emma Dexter will take on the role of Director of Visual Arts at the British Council. Since 2007, she has been responsible for the exhibition program at Timothy Taylor Gallery. Before this, from the opening of Tate Modern in 2000 until 2007, she served as Senior Curator, organizing exhibitions for notable artists such as Pierre Huyghe, Frida Kahlo, Luc Tuymans, and Bruce Nauman's commission for the Turbine Hall. Dexter also directed Chisenhale Gallery from 1988 to 1990 and was the Director of Exhibitions at the ICA during the 1990s, supporting future nominees for the British Pavilion and Turner Prize, including Rachel Whiteread and Steve McQueen. In her upcoming position, she will oversee the British Council's visual arts initiatives, manage international exhibitions, and curate the British presentation at the Venice Biennale, along with the British Council Collection, which boasts over 8,500 artworks.
