Emilio Cavallini's 'Harmony Runs On A Thread' at GR Gallery, New York

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Italian artist Emilio Cavallini (San Miniato, 1945) presents his solo exhibition 'Harmony Runs On A Thread' at GR Gallery in New York, opening September 8, 2016. The show features works from the 1980s to early 2000s, spanning various styles and languages. Cavallini, known for elevating hosiery to garment status after collaborating with Mary Quant in 1960s London, later worked with luxury brands like Dior, Celine, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, and Gucci. His artistic practice uses materials from hosiery production—nylon thread, bobbins, printed fabrics, and stockings—to create Accumulations, Diagrams, Checkerboards, Fractals, and Catastrophic Structures. Inspired by Constructivism (Pevsner, Gabo), Geometric Abstraction (Malevich), Op Art (Vasarely), and chaos theory, Cavallini explores geometry, mathematics, and architecture. He founded Stilnovo in 1969, producing Mary Quant hosiery for 25 years, and later launched his own line. His first monograph 'La magnifica ossessione' was published by Skira in 2011. Curated by Giovanni Granzotto and Alberto Pasini, the exhibition runs until October 9, 2016 at GR Gallery, 255 Bowery, East Village.
