artist · 2026-04-27

Emilia Palomba, a Sardinian ceramic artist and designer who bridged craft and contemporary art, has died. Born in Cagliari in 1929, she spent her childhood in Oliena, whose women became the central subject of her ceramics until the early 1970s, when she shifted to jute. After studying at Rome's Liceo Artistico and opening a studio on Via Margutta, she returned to Sardinia to work on the external frieze of the Sassari Artisanship Pavilion with Ubaldo Badas, Giuseppe Silecchia, and Gavino Tilocca. In 1956 she opened her own workshop in Cagliari, where she hosted Maria Lai, whose enameled ceramics were deeply influenced by Palomba's female figures. As a designer, she participated in I.S.O.L.A. (Sardinian Institute for the Organization of Artisan Work), a project by Eugenio Tavolara and Ubaldo Badas to revive local crafts, creating original series of tableware, lamps, mirrors, candelabras, and jewelry. Her work caught the attention of the Aga Khan and Stavros Niarchos. She also produced pieces fired a third time with gold and platinum. In 2000, a dedicated showcase at the Cento Anni di Ceramica exhibition in Sassari honored her. Public recognition grew after Grace Kelly visited her studio, ordering ceramics for herself and friends. Her works are in collections from Sardinia to the White House, acquired by President Nixon. Palomba continued working with clay into old age. The Sardinian art and craft community mourns a figure of international excellence.
