Emil Nolde: Expressionist Painter and Nazi Sympathizer

artist · 2026-05-06

Hans Emil Hansen, known as Emil Nolde, was born on August 7, 1867, in Nolde, Denmark. Despite facing challenges, such as being rejected by the Munich Academy in 1898, he pursued his passion for art. In 1899, he attended the Académie Julian in Paris, financing his education by selling postcards. He wed Ada Vilstrup in 1902, adopted the name Nolde, and relocated to Berlin. Nolde became a member of Die Brücke in 1906 but departed after a year. He was later part of the Berlin Secession until his expulsion. In 1912, he showcased his work with Der Blaue Reiter and created over 120 drawings inspired by the Völkerkundemuseum. Joining the Nazi Party in the early 1920s led to the removal of 1,052 of his works. He passed away on April 13, 1956, in Seebüll, and the Nolde Foundation was founded that same year.
