EMF Founding Keyboardist Derry Brownson Dies at 55 After Brain Tumour

Derran "Derry" Brownson, the original keyboardist and a founding member of the iconic 90s band EMF, passed away at 55 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. The band, renowned for their popular track "Unbelievable," shared the news of his passing on Thursday. In July 2025, Brownson discussed his diagnosis with the BBC while performing at Cindyfest in his hometown of Cinderford, an event he called "very, very special." His bandmate Ian Dench fondly remembered him as "beautiful inside and out" and noted Brownson's warmth towards him as an outsider in the Forest of Dean. Brownson's final performance took place in May in Frome, and he continued to share jokes with Dench until weeks before his death. In May 2025, the band received a blue plaque in Cinderford. Brownson had undergone surgery for the tumour and praised the NHS for their exceptional care. He expressed a strong wish to return to performing, especially in his hometown. Dench reminisced about Brownson's spirited nature, including a memorable incident involving a television and his love for Wolverhampton Wanderers, while also highlighting his compassionate side, particularly his care for hedgehogs in Devon.
