Emanuele Scuotto's 'Purgatorio' Opens Nabi Art Gallery Project Room in Naples

exhibition · 2026-04-27

On October 22, 2021, Emanuele Scuotto, born in 1978 in Marano di Napoli, launched a new project room at the Nabi Art Gallery in Naples. The exhibition titled 'Purgatorio' will be on display until December 10, 2021, at both the Nabi project room and the OFF Gallery located near Cappella Sansevero. This exhibition commemorates the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death, exploring the theme of the afterlife in Naples. Scuotto's sculptures, crafted from black clay, represent forgotten souls, potentially including Giacomo Leopardi, who perished during a cholera outbreak. The historically suppressed cult of these souls, known as 'capuzzelle' or 'anime pezzentelle,' is highlighted. Curator Azzurra Immediato aims to unveil hidden narratives, connecting audiences with tragic figures from the 17th century. The Nabi project room is referred to as an 'ultradimensional gate.'
