Emanuela Mastria's 'Desdemona's Handkerchief' Installation in Rome Addresses Feminicide
Emanuela Mastria's installation 'Il fazzoletto di Desdemona' (Desdemona's Handkerchief) is on display in Rome, featuring one hundred floating white porcelain sculptures. Each piece, made by impressing lace onto porcelain, depicts a woman's handkerchief with the initials of a victim of feminicide written in red. The work, curated by Michela Becchis, takes its title from Shakespeare's Desdemona, whom Becchis describes not as a mute victim but as a rebellious young woman who consciously enters a relationship, only to be labeled a traitor by men. The installation dialogues with the historic library setting. Mastria's website is www.emanuelamastria.com.
