Elton John's Radical Eye Photography Collection at Tate Modern
The Tate Modern in London is exhibiting around 200 vintage photographs from Sir Elton John's private collection, one of the world's most significant in terms of quality and scope. The show, titled 'The Radical Eye', runs until May 7, 2016, in the Switch House. It features works by Man Ray, Dorothea Lange, László Moholy-Nagy, Edward Weston, and others, spanning the 1920s to the 1950s. The collection includes 8,000 vintage prints, curated by Jane Jackson and overseen by director Newell Harbin. The exhibition is divided into five sections: Objects, Perspectives, Abstractions; Documents; Experiments; Bodies; and Portraits. Highlights include Lange's 'Migrant Mother' (1936), Moholy-Nagy's photograms, Man Ray's rayographs and solarizations, and portraits by Irving Penn and Edward Weston. The show explores modernist photography's innovative perspectives, such as worm's-eye and bird's-eye views advocated by Aleksandr Rodchenko, whose works 'Shukhov Tower' (1927) and a collage with Varvara Stepanova are included. The exhibition is curated by Shoair Mavlian, Newell Harbin, and Simon Baker.
