Éloge du doute at Punta della Dogana: A Curated Critique

The second exhibition at Punta della Dogana in Venice, titled Éloge du doute, opened on April 8, 2011, curated by Caroline Bourgeois. The show features works from François Pinault's collection, including a large installation by Donald Judd in the main nave, alongside pieces by Maurizio Cattelan, David Hammons, Edward Kienholz, Paul McCarthy, Marcel Broodthaers, Roni Horn, Chen Zhen, Thomas Schütte, Jeff Koons, Subodh Gupta, Julie Mehretu, Tatiana Trouvé, and Sturtevant. The exhibition runs until December 31, 2011. Critic Damien Sausset notes that while the first floor offers a coherent and restrained experience, the ground floor feels disjointed, with some works appearing as market-driven choices. Highlights include Kienholz's rarely seen installation Roxys (1960-61), Broodthaers's Decor, a conquest by Marcel Broodthaers (1975), and new commissions by Mehretu and Trouvé. The show is seen as more controlled than the inaugural Mapping the Studio but still lacks overall unity.
