Elliott Erwitt Vintage Exhibition at Villa Bassi Rathgeb in Abano Terme

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The new exhibition season at Villa Bassi Rathgeb in Abano Terme opens with 'Elliott Erwitt. Vintage', featuring 180 black-and-white photographs, 150 of which are vintage prints selected by the artist himself. The remaining 30 are his most iconic works. Curator Marco Minuz arranged the vintage corpus in specific display structures at the center of each room to foster an intimate dialogue with the frescoed walls, while larger iconic works hang on the walls. Erwitt (Paris, 1928) is renowned for his ironic and grotesque observations of everyday life, social contrasts, and racial discrimination, often using animals—especially dogs—in anthropomorphic compositions. The exhibition includes video testimonies of Erwitt explaining his work, emphasizing his desire for viewers to react emotionally rather than cerebrally. A notable image is 'Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh (1950)', showing an African American child pointing a gun at his temple while laughing. The retrospective runs at Villa Bassi Rathgeb in Abano Terme, Italy.
