Elliott Erwitt's 'Personae' Exhibition in Forlì Features Unseen Color Photos
A major retrospective of photographer Elliott Erwitt (born 1928 in Paris) will open on September 23, 2017, at the Musei di San Domenico in Forlì, Italy. Titled 'Personae' and curated by Biba Giacchetti, the exhibition presents 170 works spanning Erwitt's career. For the first time, black-and-white and color photographs are displayed together, selected by the artist himself. While his black-and-white images are iconic, the color shots are largely unpublished. The show includes portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara, Sophia Loren, John Kennedy, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as everyday scenes captured with Erwitt's characteristic empathy and irony, earning him the moniker 'photographer of the human comedy.' Also featured are works by André S. Solidor, Erwitt's alter ego used for his irreverent, eccentric, digital, and 'Photoshopped' color images, presenting a complementary side to his more poetic black-and-white production. The exhibition runs until January 7, 2018. This follows another Erwitt color show, 'Kolor,' currently on view at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa.
