Elizabeth Hawes's Radical Fashion Vision Gets First Major Museum Show

exhibition · 2026-04-25

The Cincinnati Art Museum will present 'Elizabeth Hawes: Radical American Fashion' from April 24, featuring over 50 garments from the 1920s to 1960s, along with original sketches and illustrations. This is the first major museum exhibition dedicated to Hawes (1903–1971), a radical designer, author, and social commentator who helped shape American fashion identity. Curated by longtime museum curator Cynthia Amnéus, the show traces Hawes's early design methods, career evolution, and lasting influence. A companion publication, the first devoted entirely to her career, accompanies the exhibition. Amnéus also wrote and edited the catalogue before her retirement.
