Eliza Douglas Debuts at Gagosian with Recycled Paintings and Paranormal Selfies

Eliza Douglas's first solo show in her hometown, "GHOSTS," opened at Gagosian's Park and 75 location on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Curated by Francesco Bonami, it is the first in an open-ended series featuring artists not represented by Gagosian. Douglas, a fourth-generation New Yorker known for walking Balenciaga runways and collaborating with Anne Imhof, incorporated unsold paintings from Air de Paris, which closed the same day the show opened. She altered the canvases with UV-printed images of paranormal selfies by her aunt, investigative journalist Leslie Kean. The works blend commercial imagery, art-historical references, and fashion motifs, addressing the art system and the glut of AI-generated content. Bonami invited Douglas via Instagram DM after seeing her work at a Swiss Institute benefit auction; she initially ignored him. Douglas had previously hoaxed Gagosian at the 2022 Armory Show by swapping her gallery's booth sign with a replica of Gagosian's. The exhibition runs through July 31 at 821 Park Avenue.
