Elisabetta Benassi's First Major Museum Retrospective Opens at MACRO Rome
The MACRO museum in Rome is currently presenting 'Autoritratto al lavoro' (Self-Portrait at Work), marking the first significant retrospective of artist Elisabetta Benassi, who was born in Rome in 1966. This exhibition showcases thirty pieces created between 2000 and 2024, set in a dimly lit environment. Benassi's work delves into themes of anthropology, history, and cognitive ambiguity. Highlights include 'The Dry Salvages' (2013), 'All I Remember' (2010–ongoing), 'Fixator, Centurio senex' (2024), and 'The Sovereign, Individual' (2018). Featured items comprise hand-stitched carpets, two red tillers from the BENASSI brand (2016 and 2021), and video installations like 'Day's End' (2000), with some pieces partially hidden by modular alpha gypsum structures created by her sister Ilaria. The exhibition layout is open and centrifugal.
